About Us
Groppoli Custom Finishing LLC (GCF)
GCF has a different way of looking at our role as a remodeling contractor which, in turn, causes us to approach our customers’ requests differently than other contractors. We believe that a remodel is more than an upgrade to a space. We see it as a major commitment our customers make as they continually cultivate their desired lifestyle and the atmosphere they wish to perpetuate for themselves, their family, and their guests. When we agree to build a new bathroom, new kitchen, new living area, or extension to a home; we are calling upon our team to create the most luxurious and quality space in this home. This family’s sanctuary. We are not the handyman you call for a quick fix, a cheap install, or a temporary cover-up. We are the Duluth contractor you hire for a renovation that will ultimately improve your way of life and the feeling people have upon entering your home. Aside from considering lifestyle improvements, our installations are built with the highest quality materials and methods available. This ensures that our installations will last well into the 22nd century.

About Us
Groppoli Custom Finishing LLC (GCF)
Expertise
We enjoy special requests and new ideas, which is why we encourage our customers to suggest new layouts, fixtures, designs, and other elements throughout the project. Our wide array of skills enables us to perfect every aspect of your remodel. We take great care in understanding how materials work together and interact with one another, and their environment, over time. We stay up to date on the latest research in the building industry and incorporate that data into each element of our build.
Tile, Stone & Quartz
GCF is trained and experienced in the requirements set forth by Tile Council of North America (TCNA) – the industry authority on stone and tile installation standards.
Tile installations are our roots. Our owner and operator, Greg Groppoli, installed his first kitchen floor in 2003 and it is still in use to this day! In the following 20+ years, the methods and products used have been refined and enhanced to what we can now consider a premium service offered by experts in the trade. If GCF was Google – tile installation would be our search engine. We have become masters of small-scale quartz and granite fabrication as well. While we would work directly with our supplier to fabricate and install a large section of material such as a kitchen countertop, we have the ability to incorporate custom pieces of quartz into our projects on the fly with little to no additional cost for our customers. Nearly all of our bathrooms incorporate quartz in some way. If you can dream it, we can fabricate it!
Woodwork
Woodwork is one of our passions. Whether it be a full staircase or a custom built-in, GCF has you covered.
From fine woodworking to large lumber, GCF has it down. We possess and have mastered the tools and techniques required for very fine woodworking projects. While we do not offer woodworking services unrelated to home renovations, the fine-tuning of these skills enables us to fabricate stairs, kitchens, built-ins, trim, and other wood surfaces at a level of detail and care not found in other contractors.
Fixtures & Finishes
We pride ourselves on our ability to liven a space by incorporating modern technology and features that offer an additional layer of luxury and convenience to your space.
The final touches can make all the difference to the feel and function of a space and this is where we really shine. These little things make life easier and can greatly improve the comfort level of a home. It can be overwhelming to sift through the thousands of options for lighting Some of the more obvious are lighting, materials, and appliances. So, we keep a list of all our customer’s favorite added features. Imagine the feeling of walking into a bathroom with tiled floor that warmed to 85 degrees just minutes before your morning alarm. Think of the cleaning time that can be saved by adding a kitchen faucet that turns on with the touch of an elbow. The control you’d have over the mood of a room with a few hidden strips of lights controlled from your phone. An ultra-quiet garbage disposal, electrically tinted windows, dimmer switches, high-powered silent vent fans controlled by an elegant timer, or keyless entry locks that allow you to manage and monitor different codes for a nanny, hired tradesman, guest, and children. The list goes on and we’d love the opportunity to share ours with you.
Drywall & Plaster
Arguably one of the most important components to a new space are flat, clean, and crisp walls. Do not skimp on the drywall – leave it to the pros!
It’s all in the wrist! Wall finishings are one of the most misunderstood aspects of construction. It looks easy and you can sand away your mistakes, which is why we see so many novices taking on this work. To the contrary! Wall finishings are unmistakably one of the most important finishes in a home. Nothing sets a room apart like perfectly flat walls and a fresh coat of thick paint. We have dedicated ourselves to mastering this craft, understanding the proper materials and their application, and ensuring the longevity and durability of these installations. Walls are the backdrop to everything else we do for our customers which is why we do not settle for anything less than perfection.
Synthetics
The key to a lasting installation is knowing the right product for the application.
Synthetic materials such as vinyl, PVC, urethane, composites, polymers, paint, grout, ect. have their place in the construction world. Knowing how and when to incorporate them is paramount to producing a quality product. Incorrect use of these products can lead to devastating results while proper use can produce a remodel that will last generations. Our persistent research and scrutiny ensure our customers’ homes will endure anything that life throws at them. Synthetic materials can be found in adhesives, sealants, insulation, floor coverings, and more. Knowing the right product for the intended application is paramount to a lasting product.
Safety
We take safety very seriously. We make every effort to ensure the safety of our employees, your family, and your neighbors.
We probably should have included this at the top of our list. Duluth was built with lead, asbestos, and silica. Nearly every remodel we are hired for contains some combination of these toxins. GCF has trained and EPA-certified staff for the removal and remediation of these toxins. We take these portions of the project seriously – not only for our own health but for the health of our customers’ families and their children. We bag our demo materials and avoid moving through the house as much as possible. Installation of garbage shoots, sealing off living spaces, and creating negative pressure in the construction zone are always our first steps before grabbing the first demo tool. We keep our sites clean. We keep our sites safe.

Our Process
As full-time construction workers, it is easy to overlook the experience of a construction project from the viewpoint of our customers. We live and breathe construction which makes it all too easy to assume others are familiar with the process and amount of work required to renovate a home. Over the years we have found that most homeowners don’t have a clear idea of what will go on between signing a contract and paying the final invoice. This may be your first home. Maybe you haven’t had the opportunity to hire a contractor in the past. Or, maybe, you have had bad experiences with inconsiderate or ill-prepared contractors in the past. At GCF we start with a conversation with the customer about what they can expect throughout the construction process. While each project and customer is unique, the items below outline our process from start to finish on the vast majority of our projects.
The first step of every project is to get our hands and tape measures on the space. We like to have a detailed conversation with the homeowner about their desires, their lifestyle, and their expectations. We explain the benefits and limitations of their home, make suggestions, take measurements, and bring our notes back to the office so we can develop a project plan.
In some instances, further design is needed. At times a professional designer is desired. Other times, our customers prefer to take this on themselves. Regardless, we work with you to construct a design and project plan that allows us to produce the most accurate and detailed quote possible.
Regardless of the size of a project, we break down every feature into a separate line item on your quote. This provides everyone involved with a detailed description of what is included in the remodel and what it will cost. This sets expectations and lays out exactly what will be involved in the project at hand. It allows customers to easily add or remove portions of the project and know exactly what that means for their budget and the finished product. This also ensures that our installers do not miss anything. The quote seconds as a rough “to-do” list and eliminates the opportunity to skip over part of the intended design. Once our quote is finalized that’s it. We do not submit “estimates” that change as the project progresses. Our quote is our promise and our commitment to our customers.
Once the customer approves our quote and signs the contract, we submit highly detailed drawings to the city to reduce, and often eliminate, delays during the project. Duluth’s permit office stays very busy which means changes to a project design could take weeks to resolve. Therefore, we make every effort up front to produce clear, well-thought-out plans, for the city. When the inspectors arrive throughout the project, they already have a very good idea of what they will be asked to sign off on.
There’s no way around it – demolition is loud and it is messy. We section off the portion of the home we will be working in and create a dust barrier to contain the destruction. We do not use heavy saws and sledgehammers. Rather, we reverse engineer the room piece by piece carefully considering the empty canvas on which we wish to build our masterpiece. To reduce the number of days our customers have to deal with this phase we knock this out upfront. We remove everything that will not be a part of the finished space and haul it off-site. This provides a clear view of the home’s “guts” and enables us to draw up a clear checklist and schedule for the rebuild.
The finish quality of a remodel is greatly impacted by the structure on which it is built. We take our time leveling and squaring, reinforcing or replacing poor framing, checking plumbing and electrical components for future signs of failure, and bringing every facet up to today’s code requirements. Often this means reinforcing framing, insulating walls, replacing plumbing waste and water lines, and replacing or repairing electrical components. We move forward only when the space has been constructed to a standard that will forever support the installations to follow.
Now that our substrates are sound and supportive, we begin our process of installing the drywall, waterproofing, tile, cabinetry, fixtures, appliances, etc. We work from a set plan that outlines the sequence in which each element must be installed to allow the most artful and seamless integration of all components. We keep our electrician, plumber, countertop supplier, and inspectors in the loop every step of the way. We plan ahead in our scheduling to ensure everyone reserves time in their schedules to be on site when they are needed. This tactic reduces, and often eliminates, downtime and keeps the project moving forward. We plan but we do not rush. While part of our mission in customer service is to shorten the amount of time our customers are living with a home under construction, our #1 goal is to provide you with a product that we are proud of.
After all the components are installed and inspections passed (the city inspections as well as our own internal inspection) we give the area one last cleaning. To us, there is no better feeling than leaving a happy customer with a room that looks as if it has never been set foot in. Any other spaces we used in the home get a thorough check and clean including entryways and areas where tools may have been used or stored.
We leave your home after the project is complete but that does not mean we are leaving you! We encourage our customers to reach out with questions or concerns. We welcome all contact from customers if they feel something does not look quite right, they have a question about cleaning or maintenance, or just want to say “hello”. We stand by our work and take pride in knowing that 100% of our customers are enjoying the things we worked tirelessly to build for them.
